Mothers

I thought this article about Mother's was just to good not to share.  The Mother's War.  Read it, it's worth the five minutes.

Mother's Day is, to be honest, somewhat of an annoyance. It's manifestly one of those tedious Hallmark holidays wherein everyone is supposed to run out and support the revenue stream of cardboard manufacturers in the name of expressing gratitude to mothers, fathers, grandparents and anyone else to whom we might be related.

Happy Mother's Day!

I'm not Catholic... but I have been looking into it.  I am sure that my mother is screaming "what did I do wrong?!" as she reads this.   Anyways, I've been doing a lot of reading about what the Catholic church believes about sex and contraception so when I came across this today I thought I would share it with all of you...  all three of you that read my blog that is.

Pope: Sex can become "like a drug"

VATICAN CITY, Italy (AP) -- Pope Benedict XVI acknowledged Saturday that the Vatican's teaching against birth control was difficult as he praised a 1968 Church document that condemned contraception.

I liked this one...

Ottawa March for Life 2008
In local Ottawa news yesterday, 2 broken water pipes caused traffic nightmares. But if you were driving through Ottawa’s downtown core, as I was, in the afternoon, you could not miss the 8,000 marchers who paralyzed circulation around Parliament Hill. CBC radio was probably caught in some “ethical” dilemma, having to choose between reporting what goes on in Ottawa – 4 main downtown arteries filled by 8,000 people – and having to acknowledge pro-life demonstrators. Because driving down Metcalfe around 2 pm, I was shocked by the size of the March for Life. Up came the 2 o’clock local newscast and I was thinking “For sure, they’ll have to mention the march, if only to accuse it of clogging up downtown!” But no! Not a word! Not a word at 3 pm either. Not a word. The broken water pipes got the royal treatment.

My love/hate relationship with coffee

Posted in

So last night as I'm talking to my brother-in-law and writing an e-mail when Tim decides that we should have some coffee.  I rarely turn up coffee.  I love coffee.  It's my friend.  I have a special place in my diet just for coffee.  Unfortunately, I have a tendency to over due the coffee.

8:30 pm and this is when I decide to stat drinking coffee.  Normally I wouldn't think twice about it but in my old(ish) age I can no longer handle two gigantic mugs of black steamy goodness.  I seem to have forgotten that last night as I chugged back two full cups.  I knew this was going to cause problems later on as I was already vibrating around the house chattering Tim's ears off.

Alberta's midwives rally for provincial funding

When I was pregnant Tim and I had thrown around the idea of a home birth or one at a birthing centre.  I had not had the best hospital experiences and was worried this was going to be another thing that I dreaded.  Due to price and availability we decided against doing a natural birth at home or a birthing centre.  In the end it was good that we had decided to go with our Dr. and at a hospital as there were some minor complications (never mind having to be induced 2 weeks past my due date).

Ok, I have an issue with Tofu.  I gag most of the time when trying to eat it.  I'm always on the lookout for new ideas on how to eat tofu without tossing my cookies.  I think I may have found just the thing to try, does this not look fantastic?!

Kitchen Wench you take the most beautiful food photos!  I can't wait to try this Spicy Silken Tofu Stew and see if it gets me over my tofu hatred!

Why do they make cookbooks without pictures?

Seriously!  Especially dessert cookbooks.  Why?!  I don't know about all of you but I am a visual person.  I need the pictures of the oooey, gooey, yummy in my tummy looking desserts.  I just don't feel inspired to make them if I have no idea what they will look like.

This has happened to me twice lately.  I got Laura Calder's book called French Food at Home and Dorie Greenspan's book Paris Sweets.  Thankfully, I just didn't go in blind and buy them.  Granted, they both have fabulous sounding recipes but still.  I need pictures!  Doesn't anybody else feel this way?

Swimming lessons and a Birthday party!

Posted in

Today was the first day that Riley and Tim had swimming lessons together.  We left a little on the early side this morning as we weren’t 100% sure where to park.  We'd never been to the downtown YMCA.  It's lucky we left early as they had the area right around where we needed to park blocked off for a run this morning.  Not sure what the run was for but I think it had something to do with breast cancer as there was a lot of pink!
